Spaced repetition with five boxes

Every new card starts in Box 1 and is due the same day. Rate a card Known and it moves up one box; its next review is 3, 7, 14 or 30 days away, depending on the new box. Rate it Again and it drops back to Box 1, comes back once more in the same session, and is due again tomorrow.

A card rises at most one box per session, so a lucky evening cannot skip the schedule. Cards you mark as hard stay due every day and appear twice per session. The full rules are in the Leitner system explained.

Create cards three ways

Type a question and an answer, or put an image on either side from the camera or your photo library, which is handy for diagrams, maps or handwriting. With Flashcards Plus you can also record a voice memo and let AI suggest cards from it. You edit and confirm every suggestion before it is saved. More about AI flashcards from voice memos.

Study modes

The due session collects every card whose review date has arrived, across all topics. You can also study a single topic, or a single box when you want to focus on the cards that keep slipping. Practice and preview let you run through cards before an exam without changing their boxes or due dates.

Progress, streaks and reminders

A five-step staircase shows how many cards sit in each box, and every topic shows its progress. Your streak grows by one for each day on which you rate at least one card and resets after a missed day. A daily reminder at a time you choose tells you when cards are due.

Offline, private, and your data

Flashcards stores your library on your device. Creating cards, studying, images, voice memo recording and reminders all work without internet and without an account. There are no ads and no tracking SDKs. You can export the whole library, including topics, cards, progress and images, as one file and import it on another device. Sync, partners, topic library and AI with Plus

Flashcards Plus adds the features that need a server: sync across your devices, shared topics with study partners, the ready-made topic library, and AI cards from voice memos with 12 uses a day and up to 60 a month. Plus is available on iPhone and iPad today. See prices and the free trial.

Accessibility and design

Flashcards follows your system’s light or dark mode, supports large text sizes, VoiceOver and TalkBack, and calms its animations when Reduce Motion is on. The app is available in nine languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Czech. Questions? See the FAQ.
