AI flashcards
Talk for a minute, get flashcards
Record a voice memo and Flashcards turns it into flashcard suggestions. You check and edit every card before it is saved. AI card creation is part of Flashcards Plus, with 12 uses a day and up to 60 a month.
How it works in three steps
AI flashcards in Flashcards start from your voice, not from a document. The whole flow takes about a minute.
-
Record a memo
In the card wizard choose Voice memo and talk: a lecture summary, new words, facts from a book. Recording works offline and is free.
-
AI transcribes and suggests
Tap Create cards. The memo is transcribed and turned into question-and-answer suggestions for your topic.
-
Edit and confirm
Change the wording, delete what you do not need, then save. Only the cards you confirm are added to Box 1.
You stay in control
Nothing is added to your library without your confirmation. Every suggestion is editable on both sides, and if the network or the AI service fails, your memo is kept so you can try again later. A conversion that produces no cards does not count against your limit. Confirmed cards start in Box 1 and follow the Leitner system like any other card.
Great for lectures, reading notes and new words
Voice memos are fastest when you already know what you want to remember and just need it on cards.
- After a lecture: sum up the key points in a minute.
- While reading: dictate terms and definitions as you go.
- On the go: say new words and their meaning before you forget them.
- Before an exam: talk through a chapter and turn it into questions.
Fair limits, explained
Flashcards Plus includes 12 AI uses per day and up to 60 per month. One use is one memo conversion: transcription and card suggestions together. The daily limit resets at local midnight, the monthly one on the 1st. The app always shows how many uses are left. The limits exist because every conversion costs real money at the AI provider, and Flashcards has no ads to pay for it.

What about photos?
You can add photos to any card for free, from the camera or your photo library, which is ideal for diagrams, maps and handwriting. The AI does not read photos; it works only with voice memos. If you want cards from a photo of your notes, add the photo as the card image and write the question yourself, or read the notes aloud into a memo.
Privacy
Before your first conversion, the app explains what is sent and asks for your consent. For a conversion, the memo audio and its transcript are sent to an AI provider (OpenAI or OpenRouter) to create the suggestions; under the providers’ API terms, this data is not used for training by default. Your memos stay on your device, and you can delete them at any time.
Included in Flashcards Plus
AI card creation is part of Flashcards Plus, together with sync, study partners and the topic library: 4.99 € a month or 29.99 € a year, with a one-week free trial on the yearly plan. Plus is currently available on iPhone and iPad.
Questions about AI flashcards
Which languages can I speak in?
You can record memos in the nine app languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Czech. The transcription detects the spoken language automatically.
Is recording voice memos free?
Yes. Recording, playing and saving voice memos works offline in the free app. Only turning a memo into card suggestions needs Flashcards Plus and an internet connection.
What counts as one AI use?
One use is one memo conversion: the transcription and the card suggestions for that memo together. Failed conversions do not count. Plus includes 12 uses per day and up to 60 per month.
Is my audio stored?
Your memos are stored on your device until you delete them. For a conversion, the audio and transcript are sent through our server to the AI provider to create the suggestions. The providers do not use API data for training by default.
Can I make cards from a photo of my notes?
No. The AI works only with voice memos. You can add the photo itself to a card as an image, for free, and write the question yourself, or read your notes aloud into a memo and convert that.
